LOVING HONDURAS...BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES ONE FAMILY AT A TIME

Our  Work

Sewing was our first skill-based program that we started in 2017. We received a grant from the Rotary Club to buy our sewing machines. Over the years, we have helped 60 women learn how to sew. Those women have gone on to start their own businesses or be employed by factories. When our participants sell their items, they give pack a portion of their sales so that our program can be self-sustaining.

Throughout the years, we have built several homes and installed concrete floors in the homes of our families. The home pictured below belongs to Melvin and Nidiya. Melson had a head injury and wasn't able to return to work. Nidiya suffered from depression. Together, they have three kids. In Honduras, a new home means a new life. Melvin has since helped other families repair their homes out of his gratitude!

We have also been involved in hurricane relief, replacing roofs on homes for families who experinced the double hurricanes that hit Honduras in 2019

Recently, we installed a latrine for Juanita, a young woman whose sister-in-law is a long-term member of our sewing program. Juanita was born without arms and legs. A donor provided the funds needed to build this latrine so that Juanita no longer needed to crawl across gravel to use it.

We have also provided concrete floors and water filters to families who need them.

Our newest skill-based program is our leather working program.  We employ a leather teacher to help two Second Wind families learn this skill. Both families are physically disabled because of gang violence in Honduras.

Every month, our staff delivers two weeks of shelf-stable food to our 50 families who live in the most dangerous areas of the country. Many of our families are elderly, disabled, or single mothers.

Kensy is a single mom with three deaf and mute children. We raised funds to provide the equipment she needed to start her own in-home salon.  In this way, she is able to earn money to support her children and stay home to help them with their educational needs. Kency recently received great news...a doctor in her church is giving her a full scholarship so she can study nursing. We are excited to cheer her on during this new journey in her life!

Working with local leaders to infuse job skills in each of our community participants to earn a living and support themselves, their families, and their neighbors.

Second Wind's beginnings...

Our foundation started in a hospital in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, when we met a young child, Genesis, struggling from Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome...
